Cyclocross is a type of bicycle race run on a short, closed course and is unique in that the riders are occasionally required to dismount and carry their bicycles. Besides the other racers, participants also battle mud, sand, and man-made barriers. Belgium is widely considered the birthplace of cyclocross and certain races are attended by thousands of spectators.
