Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Cidade de Deus
Favela is the common term for a slum or shanty town in Brazil and these neighborhoods are located all over the country. Rocinha is one of the over 900 Favelas in Rio de Janiero and is the largest and most populated. Sensationalized by the media for violent crime and drug problems, these areas are not without those issues, but the vast majority of residents are ordinary citizens unable to afford the high cost of living in other parts of the city.
