Originating as a small fishing village in the late 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world during the Dutch Golden Age of the 17th century. As the capital and largest city in the Netherlands, its city center hosts a number of notable buildings and attractions. Dam Square is one of the most well-known and important locations in the city and the bells can be heard throughout the day alongside the busy city soundscape.
