La Cabaña Fortress is located on the east side of Havana Bay. It was built in the 18th century to defend the colonial city, and for hundreds of years since, cannon shots have been fired from the fort. Originally used to signify the opening and closing of the city’s gates, the cannon shot is now a tradition. Following a ceremony every evening, the cannon is fired off at 9:00pm sharp.
