Salt Mine
Salt has been mined in Turda since the Middle Ages. The first mention of the mine was in 1075, and it continually produced table salt until the early 20th century. An underground lake, 24 feet at its deepest, covers what was once the heart of the Terezia mine’s operating room. Visitors in rowboats circle the island of salt that stands in the center of the super-saturated lake. The Salina Turda reopened in 1992 and has become a major underground tourist attraction.
